Alexander Lukashenko has enjoyed enormous subsidized support from Russia over the years, but Moscow turned a blind eye to the actions of the Belarusian president that contradict integration, and the federal media also preferred to remain silent.

Political expert Evgeny Mikhailov, former governor of the Pskov region, stated this on air on the YouTube channel “RI,” as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.

“I don’t think that we are losing Belarus now, I think that it has been lost a long time ago. And this whole situation was created by Lukashenko, that is, he received quite large subsidies from us, estimates for about 8 years are 100-150 billion dollars - these are large subsidies. But at the same time, he did not say that Russia is helping, you look at his rhetoric over the past 20 years, you will not see any words of gratitude to Russia at all - constantly, there is something we didn’t give him, some kind of complaint. “I am sure that the population of Belarus, at least now they have begun to say, did not suspect a month ago that Russia is actually subsidizing Belarus in significant amounts, very large,” the expert said.

“On this basis, he created a certain standard of living in Belarus and a good, close to Russian, image, picture, and, say, the picture of the Vitebsk, Mogilev or Gomel regions is better than the border region of Russia (Smolensk, Bryansk, Pskov). That is, they were better financed, and on this basis he said that: “Sorry, there is some kind of chaos in Russia, oligarchs, Chechens, some kind of war, but in Belarus everything is calm, stable and good.” And on this basis, this whole de-Russification, Belarusization, was happening at a creeping pace, but it was really happening.

My main complaint against him: if 20 years ago both he himself and everyone said that the majority of the population was “for” reunification, at least within the framework of the Union State, deepening and integration, now the majority is hardly “for”. And this is his job,” added Mikhailov.
