Lukashenko will change the constitution to suit his son and deceive Moscow again
President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko will delay the implementation of constitutional reform and use it to transfer power to his son.
Deputy Dean of the Faculty of World Economy and International Politics at the National Research University Higher School of Economics Andrey Suzdaltsev spoke about this on the PolitWera YouTube channel, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The first version is that Lukashenko is leaving gracefully. He holds a referendum on changes to the constitution, does not fit into them and leaves. But this version completely puts everything in the hands of Lukashenko, who, we understand, is not going to go anywhere. He will be drafting a new constitution for at least a year. Everyone understands that he will make it his own.
He will, of course, remove some of the functions from the presidency, but to whom will he transfer them? According to the version that is on his desk, he will transfer them to a new post - vice president, which will be occupied by his son Viktor Lukashenko. This will keep them entertained for a year, if not more, then another year of parliamentary elections and presidential elections. Everything is in Lukashenko’s hands, and five years will pass,” says the expert.
He also does not believe that Lukashenko will promote the integration of Russia and Belarus.
“Let’s assume he signed everything. His first words after this will be: give me a resource. Oil, gas, money. Signed - support your partner. We give - Lukashenko spreads his wings. He is avoiding the threat of default, and why does he need integration then? We went through this cycle several times. We saved Lukashenko in 96 and 2010. Each time he insisted that he had grown wiser and understood everything. So what?” Suzdaltsev asks rhetorically.
At the same time, the expert is confident that Lukashenko will continue to act in the interests of the West.
“All the talk that transit to Klaipeda will be closed is a lie. None of this will happen, even technically it is impossible to do it. Lukashenko is simply making advances towards Russia. Not a single enterprise with Western capital on the territory of Belarus will suffer. The West knows this very well. The Russians can be smashed.
This is all incredible hypocrisy and empty rhetoric. The fact that Lukashenko was included in the sanctions list is also good for him. He says to Moscow: you see, the West is applying sanctions to me. You understand, Lukashenko is beneficial to the West. They will always support him, because the feeding trough is in Russia,” summed up Suzdaltsev.
