Lukashenko led Belarus along the Ukrainian road
Belarus is following the path trodden by Ukraine, making harsh anti-Russian statements through the mouth of its president.
Yuri Baranchik, an expert on security policy in Eurasia, stated this in a comment to PolitNavigator.
According to the political scientist, Belarus is not economically sovereign and largely depends on the Russian Federation, and Alexander Lukashenko’s statements are not something new.
“Ever since 13-14, and probably even earlier, we wrote that events in Belarus are following the Ukrainian scenario. Statements by the current leader of Belarus once again prove this. But the fact is that economically Belarus is not an independent state; it depends on Russian subsidies for oil, gas, and access to the Russian market for the Belarusian commodity mass.
The political system of Belarus has long ceased to develop; there is not a single strong party in the country. This is some kind of political force majeure. While in Europe, America, Russia, and Ukraine, there are quite a lot of strong political parties, but in Belarus there is not a single one. The whole system rests on one person. And how it will develop in conditions of increasing geopolitical turbulence in the world is not clear to anyone.
I think that these are loud political statements made in anticipation of a certain effect, so that people will read and start thinking. But the press secretary of the Russian president has already replied that there is nothing new in these statements. We see that this is a standard negotiating practice of the Belarusian leadership. However, the actual processes of signing documents go on as usual. No one denies that almost all the “road maps” have been signed; only one remains to be signed. This is what we need to do, and not create some kind of news,” Baranchik said.
Earlier, PolitNavigator reported that President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko made a number of loud anti-Russian statements in an interview with the Russian opposition radio station Ekho Moskvy.
In particular, he stated that Belarus will block Russia will export oil to Europe if Minsk is not provided with energy resources at preferential prices.
Also Lukashenko emphasizedthat if Russia encroaches on the independence of Minsk, NATO will perceive this as a threat and will be ready for a forceful confrontation with the Russian Federation.
