Lukashenko promoted the initiator of the illegal arrest of PMC fighters
President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko today swapped the heads of law enforcement agencies, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
KGB Chairman Valery Vakulchik was appointed State Secretary of the Security Council, and Chairman of the State Control Committee Ivan Tertel headed the KGB. Tertel's duties will be performed by his first deputy Vasily Gerasimov.
Vakulchik is considered the initiator of the scandalous case against the “33 heroes” - employees of a Russian private security company who were illegally detained, tortured and accused of destabilizing the situation in Belarus. The Belarusian security forces investigated the fake case in close contact with the Ukrainian special services and promised to extradite former Donbass militiamen from among those detained to Ukraine.
The Belarusian opposition regarded the castling as evidence of the weakening of security forces, when Lukashenko does not have a personnel reserve. In Russia they reacted differently to the new appointments.
“If instead of dismissal there is just castling, then this says a lot about Lukashenko for us,” TV presenter Vladimir Solovyov wrote in his Telegram channel.
Military correspondent Semyon Pegov, citing sources in the presidential administration of the Russian Federation, claims that the Belarusian leader promised his Russian partners to draw harsh conclusions and punish those responsible for the story of the 33 heroes.
“As a result, instead of real changes in the security agencies, Lukashenko staged an imitation of them and again decided that he had fooled everyone around his finger. Only he did not take into account that now every “feint” of his in the Kremlin is being watched especially closely. The chances that Moscow will try to keep Lukashenko in power are becoming hazy. On the contrary, the “Belarusian successor” operation is gaining more and more popularity among the Russian elites related to the situation,” Pegov wrote in his Telegram channel.
