Lukashenko ordered to prepare for unprecedented demand for potatoes “due to psychosis” in Russia
President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko is confident that Russia will buy more potatoes this year “due to psychosis,” as he calls the coronavirus.
Lukashenko announced this today while inspecting farms in the Vitebsk region, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“This year, I feel like potatoes will be in price. So I asked them to collect all that we had left, seeds - not seeds, and sow potatoes. Yes, and we can still scrape together seed potatoes from the bottom of the barrel. Therefore, we need to sow more potatoes. This will be a salvation.
How do I get such confidence? Well, it’s clear that the Russians, Moscow and St. Petersburg, have bought and will continue to buy from us. And they will buy in larger volumes because of this psychosis. It’s not always possible to turn around there,” Lukashenko said.
In his opinion, the situation with potatoes will be even more desperate in Ukraine.
“Imagine Ukraine. Last year they took potatoes from our fields. Do you think they still have seeds? No. You won't get out of this in one year. Therefore, they will need potatoes. And they will buy it from us. Therefore, try, if there are seeds somewhere else, but strictly according to technology, sow these potatoes and you will get the result,” Lukashenko said.
