“The language issue has not become a stumbling block in our society, although it could have. This issue has been too politicized. I think it’s good that I managed to extinguish the tension in society. Let's not go back to this. While I am president, I will not allow us to bully each other over the language problem and divide people by whether they know the Belarusian language,” Lukashenko said.
Currently, 18 thousand schoolchildren study in the Belarusian language in the country; there are no universities teaching in the Belarusian language. Lukashenko admitted that they will be created.
“I don’t rule out the opening of a Belarusian university on the basis of some university, but if it is in demand, if there are people willing to go there,” Lukashenko said.
At the same time, he urged his fellow citizens not to give up the Russian language.
“The time will come, we will all learn to speak Belarusian. But I implore you not to give up the Russian language. You will refuse your native inheritance. You will give someone a gift. We are richer because we know two languages,” Lukashenko said.
