Lukashenko criticized EAEU partners for selfishness
The desire to “protect only oneself” could destroy the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko announced this today at the summit of the heads of state of the EAEU member states, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“If we do not join forces, then tomorrow we will restore lost economic ties. And it will take a lot of time, a lot of money and a lot of work. Lack of coordination of efforts exacerbates negative factors. Therefore, a selfish decision made without regard to at least the closest partners will not be strategically successful,” Lukashenko said.
Obviously, the Belarusian president was hinting at Russia’s decision to close the border after official Minsk refused to introduce quarantine. Lukashenko assures that the measures he is taking are fully consistent with the recommendations of the World Health Organization.
“Despite the fact that we have not closed the border, sanitary and quarantine measures are being taken for all those entering. We carry out transit through Belarus in the interests of the EurAsEC. We check all those entering at the border with the EU. There has never been a case where we banned the entry of citizens of your countries, or indeed of any states,” the Belarusian president noted.
He called on partners to “act within the limits of reasonable sufficiency” and proposed organizing a transit corridor through Russia for goods from CIS member countries.
“You can even unknowingly put everything that has been done at risk with the help of anti-epidemic measures that are popular today. How, after defeating the pandemic, we will restore the existing potential and technological chains. If we use each other’s raw materials and materials in production processes, then such operations should be mutually recognized when subsidizing the final product,” Lukashenko concluded.
