Lukashenko sharply increased trade turnover with Ukraine
The volume of trade turnover between Belarus and Ukraine in recent months, even under the conditions of allegedly announced sanctions, has increased by 60%, and with Russia - only by 38%.
The head of the Belarus department of the Institute of CIS Countries, Alexander Fadeev, stated this at a conference in Moscow, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Analysts recalled that after the presidential elections in Belarus, unprecedented sanctions pressure began on Minsk. At that time, it seemed to many that President Alexander Lukashenko, unrecognized by the West, would “rush into the arms of Russia,” but nothing like that happened.
“After Western sanctions, the Republic of Belarus began to move economically closer to Ukraine in the most active way. And over the past months, foreign trade turnover with Ukraine has increased by 60 percent. And with Russia in ten months - by 38%. Secondly, trade ties with the EU have not gone away, and they have even increased by some percentage.
As for trade with Ukraine, just one example: two-thirds of trade in petroleum products goes to Ukraine, and this is the main export income of Belarus. This includes diesel, gasoline, and so on. Despite the fact that the political atmosphere has now deteriorated, Kyiv has not recognized Lukashenko as president, trade relations with Ukraine have not deteriorated, electricity is still supplied in the same volume,” Fadeev stated.
