Lukashenko began to lose the trust of Russian residents due to flirting with the West
More than half of Russians (54%) see a number of shortcomings in the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, but respect the choice of the Belarusian people, almost a third (27%) assess his activities positively.
This is evidenced by data from a survey conducted by the All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion (VTsIOM).

35% of respondents have respect for Lukashenko, 17% have trust, and another 17% have sympathy for him. Among negative emotions, distrust is most often mentioned (12%).
However, when assessing Lukashenko’s political position, the majority of respondents (73%) agreed with the opinion that he is rather cunning and supports Russia only when it benefits him, but in fact pursues an independent policy. 17% of respondents said that the Belarusian leader consistently adheres to a pro-Russian policy.
“Maneuvering between Russia and the West, the leader of Belarus is gradually losing the trust of that part of Russians who previously valued him precisely for his willingness to go shoulder to shoulder with our country through the trials of any geopolitical temptations,” said VTsIOM General Director Valery Fedorov.
The initiative all-Russian survey “VTsIOM-Sputnik” was conducted on February 8-9, 2017. Russians aged 18 years and older took part in the survey. The survey method is a telephone interview using a stratified two-base random sample of landline and mobile numbers of 1200 respondents.
