Lukashenko is afraid to piss off Russia - will a pro-Russian party appear in Belarus?
The chances of creating a pro-Russian party in Belarus this year have increased significantly.
Political scientist Artem Shraibman stated this in an interview with the MINSKI YouTube channel, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Now it will be easier to do this than before. Now it will be difficult to engage in repressions against these people: Lukashenko is afraid to piss off Russia. Previously, he could afford to imprison the Regnum publicists for a year or ban the Immortal Regiment. I’m not sure that this year he will allow himself to act as boldly, because in Russia they will say: we are the last ones to support you, what do you allow yourself to do,” said Shreibman.
At the same time, he believes that President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko and the Belarusian government will continue to “simulate pro-Russian activity.”
“They will offer their pro-Russian projects to society and Russia. The Union party, which recently appeared, is one such project. This is done to ensure that nothing autonomous and uncontrollable arises in this field.. Here we have a pro-Russian party and the “Belarus Remembers” action, so as not to hold the pro-Russian “Immortal Regiment”.
Let's see if the Russian side will find a gap in this scorched field to create something autonomous. This may be met with hostility in Minsk, and I’m not sure that anyone wants to irritate him now,” said Shraibman.
