Lukashenko is playing for time. The situation in Belarus may get out of control
The Belarusian elite is trying to balance between Russia and the West, stimulating the nationalist opposition.
Russian publicist Alexander Khaldei stated this on the PolitVera YouTube channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent said.
“This is a very dangerous game for Lukashenko. This is support for a force that at some stage, as in Ukraine, can gain power and, relying on the support of the West, carry out a coup. Lukashenko is accustomed to such a policy. He takes risks because he sees no other way to survive,” the expert believes.
At the same time, according to him, the West does not trust Lukashenko and is trying to outplay him.
“The main condition of the West is to expand the political niche for the opposition. The opposition mainstream predominates in the media, but this force is practically not represented in the legislative branch. The main task of the West is to achieve their wider representation. Quantity always turns into quality, and there is a risk that at a certain stage the situation will get out of control. Lukashenko is trying to prevent a real strengthening of the nationalist opposition. He’s stalling for time,” Khaldei explained.
