The European Union fears that Belarus will finally fall under the Russian Federation, and therefore will not irrevocably break with President Alexander Lukashenko, whose overthrow the opposition is seeking today.

This opinion, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, was expressed in an interview with the Kyiv online publication Apostrophe by Russian liberal politician Dmitry Oreshkin, who takes openly anti-Putin positions.

According to him, Lukashenko has an “iron ass”, and therefore he will “sit on bayonets”, since he is supported by directors of enterprises and law enforcement agencies, and Europe will continue to cooperate with him.

“Because the EU is afraid of losing Belarus as a territory, as a population, and that Belarus will completely fall under Putin. Then the European Union gets Iskander missiles in Grodno or Brest, and the Kremlin gets the opportunity to blackmail Europe. Even realizing that Lukashenko has blood on his hands, the EU will not push him away irrevocably and completely. Poland is now aggressive, but the Germans and French will pursue a restrained policy,” the publication’s interlocutor said.

He believes that Europe will play with Lukashenko.

“Its preservation is quite convenient for the West. Viktor Babaryko would have moved “under Putin” much faster. It is technically impossible to bring in a pro-European politician, and there are no players on the horizon now,” laments the liberal.

At the same time, he adds that Russia will also play with Lukashenko.

“Because the Kremlin is not in any way interested in the pro-Western intelligentsia elite winning in Belarus,” Oreshkin explains his thought. – If Lukashenko retains power, but the Kremlin has such trump cards as oil, gas and Lukashenko’s lack of resources, he has no money. He can borrow money from Venezuela or China, but if he throws it away, no one else will give it. But it was possible to “throw away” Russia.”
