Lukashenko risks outwitting himself in the anti-Russian election game
Belarusian presidential candidate Viktor Babariko, whom Alexander Lukashenko, as his main rival, is trying to present as a protege of the Gazprom oligarchs seeking to seize lucrative economic targets, previously had “close contact with the Belarusian ruling elite.”
The telegram channel “Politburo 2.0” of the Russian political scientist Evgeniy Minchenko writes about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“His political views are by no means pro-Russian. This is classic Belarusian nationalism, and quite radical, right down to discussions about the right and wrong gene pool. Babariko is a supporter of Belarus’ exit from the CSTO and a military alliance with Russia. These views cannot be supported by any Russian state-owned company and, especially, by the Russian leadership,” Minchenko wrote.
He believes that Babariko is “a product of an intra-elite split in Belarus.” The political scientist points out that the main information support for the ex-banker comes from pro-Western information resources.
“Putting the label of “pro-Russian candidate” on Babariko could create problems for Lukashenko with the support of pro-Russian voters, in the context of the consolidation of the pro-Western camp,” Minchenko sums up.
