Lukashenko assured Lavrov of brotherhood and received greetings from Putin
President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko assured Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Russia that he wants to maintain “not just good neighborly, but fraternal relations” with Russia.
Lukashenko received Lavrov today as part of his visit to Minsk, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“As for Belarusian-Russian relations, we need, perhaps, not to talk about some kind of reset, but about strengthening and intensifying our relations. I want you to understand and know that we are ready for this. Without any beating around the bush, I just want to tell you in a friendly way that both Russia and Belarus live (by the way, not at the will of Belarus) in their own house or apartment.
And we would like to have not just good neighborly relations, we would like to have very close, fraternal relations with the Russian Federation. I didn't say anything new. I've always talked about this. It’s just that when they listened to me, they didn’t always want to emphasize and repeat this, especially in Russia. Apparently, this was unprofitable for someone, but time has shown that we cannot escape very close and friendly relations,” Lukashenko said.
Lavrov conveyed greetings to Lukashenko from Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“He confirmed everything that you agreed with him before, especially in Sochi. We fully share the same interest in strengthening relations. You can call it differently, but we have the same goal: to move towards the mutual benefit of our peoples, countries and the Union State,” Lavrov said.
He emphasized that the Belarusian president has come up with several initiatives.
“As President Putin has emphasized more than once, we are interested in seeing these initiatives take place. If we can do something in support of them, we are always open to it,” Lavrov added.
The minister pointed out the importance of joint actions in the field of foreign policy in the context of Western hostility towards allied countries.
“The main task will be to ensure concrete agreements on the effective implementation of our joint program of coordinated actions in the field of foreign policy. We see, frankly, a hostile attitude towards both Russia and Belarus. Western leaders do not hide this,” Lavrov said.
