The publication notes that Skiba began speaking out against the ATO even before the Ilovaisk cauldron, “when it seemed that the Ukrainian army was about to take Donetsk and Lugansk, and the militaristic and national-patriotic frenzy in Ukrainian society was still on the rise.”
“I initially understood that Maidan was an unnecessary evil and would lead to very bad consequences. I understood that in the conflict in Donbass the Maidan side was completely wrong. I understood that reality was being turned inside out. And for me it was simply unthinkable to contribute to this,” the publication’s interlocutor emphasized.
He also said that because of his anti-war position, he began to have problems with right-wing radicals.
“One of my children’s books was withdrawn from sales at the Lviv Book Publishers Forum. Another, on the initiative of Svoboda, was deprived of a prize from the Lviv City Hall. Last year, at the poetry festival “Kyiv Lavra”, a brigade of nationalists led by the notorious Dmitry Reznichenko dispersed the presentation of the anthology “Honeycomb” because the organizers dared to put my name on the poster (I was not at the presentation itself). There is constant Facebook harassment and threats - however, I quickly developed an immunity to them,” says Skiba.
At the same time, he says that there are hawks in favor of continuing the war in different regions of Ukraine, and not just in its western part.
“Galicia is not Galicia, people are the same everywhere. War hawks and pacifists exist everywhere, regardless of territorial reference. Look at sociology, the majority of Ukrainians are now against war. Another thing is that only a few dare to talk about it,” the writer noted.
In his opinion, Donbass will be able to return to Ukraine only “under a different government and with autonomy rights.”
“Since Maidan supporters carried out a coup, their government had to make concessions to dissenting regions. They did not demand so much - the same autonomy and a second Russian state. The pleasure of revolution always comes at a price. In the end, all conflict issues should have been resolved through referendums (as is customary in Europe). But, apparently, war was a desired goal for this government,” Skiba believes.
He also said that before the Maidan events there was no need for federalization, but now he thinks that it is inevitable.
“In general, I am far from this. By and large, I don't care. The main thing is that such ideas are implemented or blocked peacefully,” Skiba concluded.
