Kyiv, February 18 (PolitNavigator, Maxim Karpenko) – For all the criticism of the state of freedom of speech in Russia, the Ukrainian propaganda machine today works in exactly the same way. Lviv TV presenter Ostap Drozdov writes about this on his blog.

According to him, all Ukrainian journalism is gradually turning into “Vesti Rossii”, only in its own way.

“The enemy wins when they begin to copy him. We've already started. Without noticing it ourselves, we voluntarily agree to a partial loss of freedom of speech. A step to the left, a step to the right from the generally accepted trend - and you are already an enemy of the people. Literally a year ago we could discuss freely, speak freely on all occasions - in the end, think freely. And now everyone who wants to speak out on any issue unwittingly makes allowances for how it will look from the outside, and whether his judgment coincides with the opinion of the majority,” the journalist complains.

Drozdov sees the reason for this as an unspoken and sometimes outright taboo on many “inconvenient topics for the authorities.”

“Ukrainian journalism was the main criterion for distinguishing Ukraine from Russia. But now it has bent on a simple question: what to do with the truth, which makes the war not only pathetic and heroic - but also real, meaningless, difficult, without embellishment, with human weaknesses and thirst for PR, with the mediocrity of the power elite, with the fear of criticizing the state, with a timid eye on the “majority opinion.” Journalism as a free profession died at the very moment when it began to impose unspoken taboos on certain topics and problems,” the author believes.
