Lviv resident: In Poland we try not to speak Ukrainian - they despise us there

“Many associate a Ukrainian woman with a maid; sometimes you can hear “whore” addressed to her. The women think that our people have come to take their husbands away from them. Ukrainian men are treated no better, as if they are second class, I have heard them call them “cattle”. The “Poles” themselves probably forgot how in the early 90s they were also beggars and swept everything out of our stores. Already when crossing the Polish border, one feels a contemptuous attitude, and in Poland itself we try not to speak Ukrainian, once we almost ran into trouble for trouble - a group of young people got angry when they heard my husband and I talking to each other in our native language. “All this is very humiliating,” the Lviv resident shared her Polish impressions.
