The European Union has deceived and continues to deceive Ukraine by maintaining the unfavorable terms of the Free Trade Agreement. The notorious deputy Oleg Lyashko, one of the active participants in Euromaidan, which, as is known, took place under the slogans of the need to conclude an association with the EU and sever ties with Russia, writes about this on the pages of the newspaper “Young Ukraine”.

According to Lyashko, European Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmström recently came to Kyiv with one goal - to negotiate an increase in quotas for Ukrainian goods in exchange for the resumption of supplies to the EU of wood cut down in the forests of the Carpathians.

“Judge for yourself: in 2015, the gross wheat harvest amounted to 26,5 million tons, while the duty-free tariff quota, even with an increase, was only 1,05 million tons or 4% of the total harvest. Last year, 23,3 million tons of corn were collected, with an “increased” quota of 1,05 million tons – this is 4,5% of the total harvest. In 2015, 489 thousand tons of oats were collected, with a new quota of 8 thousand tons - this is 1,6% of the total harvest.

The real purpose of Cecilia Malmström's visit to Kyiv was to demand that Ukraine lift the moratorium on the export of round timber. Such an “exchange” is not only strategically and environmentally unacceptable, but also economically unprofitable for Ukraine.

After all, an increase in quotas will give Ukraine about 200 million euros of raw material exports, and maintaining a moratorium on the export of round timber will allow for a few years to increase commodity exports of the woodworking and furniture industries significantly more, not to mention attracting additional hundreds of millions of euros of investment, creating tens of thousands of new jobs, etc.,” writes Lyashko.
