Lyashko threatened the Americans to reconsider Ukraine's renunciation of nuclear weapons
Going towards the international community, Ukraine renounced nuclear weapons by signing the Budapest Memorandum, and now its partners do not want to remember this.
Oleg Lyashko stated this at the XI Security Forum in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“There is no doubt that the United States plays a very important role in the modern history of Ukraine. President Reagan's visionary policy towards the evil empire, the USSR, created the conditions for its weakening and peaceful collapse. The victory of the free world, led by the United States, in the Cold War provided a window of opportunity for the Ukrainian people to gain state independence. At the same time, Ukraine, through its struggle, also contributed to the liberation of Europe from the communist empire centered in Moscow.
After the collapse of the USSR, Ukraine inherited the third most powerful nuclear potential in the world. Meeting the international community, incl. The USA and Ukraine agreed to complete nuclear disarmament and accession to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. Such good will of Ukraine, together with its devotion to the ideals of freedom and democracy, formed the basis for building a strategic partnership with the United States.
At the same time, the leadership of Ukraine turned out to be unprepared to develop an adequate policy regarding nuclear weapons, which were in our possession. An international agreement to exchange the world's third largest arsenal of nuclear weapons for guarantees of territorial integrity and independence has failed. The Budapest Memorandum showed its ineffectiveness. Many of our partners advise us to accept the fact that it did not work and we need to turn the page.
We do not perceive our unilateral nuclear disarmament as a page turned over.
By the way, in the speech of the US Deputy Secretary of Defense, not once in the context of security was there a reminder of the Budapest Memorandum. Just like last year, US Vice President Biden spoke in parliament, and there was not a word in the 50-minute report about the Budapest Memorandum,” he said.
