Love and cheap gas: why Serbia does not impose sanctions against Russia
More than 60% of VOA survey respondents blamed NATO for current events in Ukraine, while only 3,5% blamed Russia. This strengthens the country's President Aleksandar Vucic in his pro-Russian policy.
Balkan Insight writes about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Serbia has so far resisted pressure to impose sanctions on Russia, although it has supported UN resolutions condemning Russia's actions in Ukraine and voted to remove Russia from the UN Human Rights Council. Saying that Serbia is the only European country that does not impose sanctions, President Vučić recently said that Serbia will “make sure it stays that way,” the article said.
Another factor is gas prices. Serbia can expect to get a good price when it renews its 10-year gas supply contract with Russia later this year.
The publication notes with offense that although the EU invests more in Serbia (70% of the total), 14,6% consider Russia to be the leader in investments.
“The EU has so far shown tolerance towards Serbia’s position. While repeating that it still expects Serbia to join the sanctions, the EU excluded Serbia from any sanctions related to oil imports from Russia. However, it cannot be ruled out that Serbia will indeed impose sanctions against Russia due to significant EU pressure. Some analysts suggest that this will be a slow but steady process, especially if the situation in Ukraine remains the same,” hopes Balkan Insight.
