People get sick with coronaviruses every year
In the coming months, a vaccine against the COVID-19 coronavirus infection that is raging in the world today should appear.
Olga Karpova, head of the Department of Virology at Moscow State University, spoke about this in an interview with Moskovsky Komsomolets. Lomonosov, where they began to create the first Russian recombinant vaccine against coronavirus under the leadership of RAS academicians Joseph Atabekov and Mikhail Kirpichnikov.
The latter, speaking at a meeting of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said that a candidate vaccine against the coronavirus that causes COVID-2109 could be created in 1,5–2 months.
At the same time, Karpova stated that it is already pointless to vaccinate citizens against COVID-19 with it.
“But we are working for the future, because it is absolutely certain that dangerous infections caused by coronaviruses, such as SARS and MERS, are returning. In 3-4 years, the new coronavirus can overcome the species barrier and infect a person,” the doctor believes.
“Most likely, you won’t need to be vaccinated against coronavirus regularly, like against the flu. Still, its most powerful varieties flare up every 3-4 years. Although we get sick with other types of coronaviruses almost every year, did you know that?” Karpova said.
According to her, science has identified a total of 7 coronaviruses that can infect people.
“Three of them are dangerous, and we simply don’t notice the other four: we sneezed, coughed, experienced a temperature of +37 degrees, and that’s all. Usually no one distinguishes them from regular influenza B, rhinoviruses, adenoviruses, which can circulate in parallel,” the doctor said.
She also added. that no more than 10 percent of people get sick with non-dangerous coronaviruses.
“These are 229E-CoV, NL63-CoV, HKU1-Cov, OC43-CoV. By the way, now two of them are also infecting the world’s population, along with influenza B and SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19,” says the virologist.
She also said that to protect against SARS-Cov-2 she keeps alcohol-based hand gels in every bag and did not recommend using masks.
“Masks, as a rule, only bring harm. It makes sense to wear them on a sick person if he is going to have contact with healthy people,” says Karpova.
