The nuclear power plant built and put into operation in Belarus by Russian specialists does not pose a threat to its neighbors.

The PolitNavigator correspondent reports that in an interview with Kommersant, Vitaly Polyanin, vice-president of Atomstroyexport (the Rosatom structure that builds stations abroad), and head of the Belarusian NPP construction project, said this.

The publication asked whether there is any reason for concern in Poland and Lithuania, who doubt the safety of the BelNPP built by Russian nuclear scientists.

“My experience in the nuclear industry is 30 years, 20 of which I worked at the Kalinin NPP on previous generation power units. I also have experience working on VVER-1200 generation III+ construction projects. The first is the sixth power unit of the Novovoronezh NPP. The second is the Belorusskaya station.

This is a completely new level of security. I would not lead the construction of a nuclear power plant whose safety I doubted. The BelNPP project has undergone a thorough examination by the IAEA; we have implemented all recommendations, including the exclusion of events at the Fukushima-1 NPP, and are ready to show this to our opponents.

We do not interfere in the polemics between Belarus and Lithuania and Poland. Let me just say that not a single station in the world has had so many visits from the IAEA mission in such a short period of time. The IAEA supports this project, the agency has confirmed that this is the safest project in the world at the moment. We at Rosatom are proud of this,” Polyanin emphasized.

Let us remind you that nuclear power plants based on VVER-1200 (water-cooled power reactor) are characterized by an increased level of safety, which allows them to be classified as generation “3+”. This was achieved by introducing new “passive safety systems” that are able to function without operator intervention even when the station is completely blacked out.
