This was reported by the Ukrainian publication LIGA.net with reference to several market players.
As the development director of the Ukrainian traffic exchange point UA-IX (Ukrmot) Mikhail Polovinka told the publication, Mail.ru sent them a notice according to which the group of companies will stop delivering traffic to Ukraine from December 20.
“According to them, transport to Ukraine is expensive for them,” Polovinka clarified the reason for disconnecting from UA-IX.
A similar letter came to the Giganet.UA exchange point, which warned other traffic exchange participants about the exit of Mail.ru: “Dear Giganet.UA participants! At the request of the Mail.ru company, we inform you that the Mail.ru company ceases to deliver its traffic to Ukraine. Accordingly, from December 20.12.2016, XNUMX there will be no announcements on Giganet.UA. Please plan to migrate your traffic.”
According to rough estimates by a Ukrainian expert, disconnecting from Ukrainian traffic exchange points will help Mail.ru save approximately 50 Euros per month on traffic delivery. At the same time, alternative connections to Mail.ru, for which the group does not pay anything, will remain.
Sources of the Ukrainian publication do not exclude political reasons: “Mail.ru could simply say: get out of Ukraine.” In order not to wait for such a turn, the holding could make its own decision, explaining it by the need to save on traffic.
Mail.Ru Group itself comments on the situation as follows:
“We are indeed stopping delivering our Internet traffic to traffic exchange points in Ukraine. We believe that this will not affect our Ukrainian users, since in addition to our channel there are many other commercial operator channels between Russia and Ukraine. This was entirely our decision, driven solely by economic reasons: Ukrainian telecom operators have increased the cost of some types of services more than several times since the beginning of this year. We are ready to organize communication channels with any Ukrainian operators who want to connect to us at our points of presence,” the holding’s press service said in a statement.
