Maidan was preparing for evacuation to Galicia – Parubiy
In February 2014, the Maidan activists did not believe in their victory and were preparing to retreat and relocate to Lviv.
The former head of the “Maidan Self-Defense” and now the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, Andriy Parubiy, told Ukrainskaya Pravda, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, recalling the hottest clashes of February 2014, which resulted in the mass death of police officers and Maidan activists.
“It was a big tragedy, but our goal was to hold the Maidan. Nobody knows, I’m talking for the first time, but there was a backup plan - if the Maidan doesn’t hold out, move to Western Ukraine. Since all the councils and administrations of Western Ukraine were under our control, we had to organize resistance there, in Lvov. When I was taken to the hospital after being wounded and gas poisoned on the evening of the 18th, I received a signal: “Andrey, don’t return to Maidan, go straight to Lvov, set up headquarters there,” the speaker said.
However, he refused to give the name of the person from whom the signal came.
“The idea of moving to Lviv was in a very narrow circle,” Parubiy admitted. – And I don’t even know if I’m doing it quite correctly when I talk about it. If we were then pressed by tanks, we would have to retreat. But they couldn’t just leave.”
