Maidan deprived Ukraine of its last European values – Kiev lawyer
Despite the fact that Maidan supposedly stood for “European values,” Ukraine never became a truly democratic and legal state in which human rights are respected.
Kiev lawyer Valentin Rybin said this on the YouTube channel “Vlast vs Vlashchenko,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“In 2014 in Ukraine, as a result of the so-called revolution of dignity, it was established that dignity had won, and in Ukraine there was now a panic about “European values.” And among these values, the first is human rights, human freedom.
And every time I took upon myself the responsibility to protect people in political processes, I tried to prove to others that if you are talking about values, freedom, equality, the opportunity to prove your innocence, then this must be done in all processes, including political.
And every process that I carried out was a signal to the whole society that for some people obtain European values, but for those who can easily be called a separatist or traitor to the Motherland, these values do not exist.
This is shown by my five-year practice in such proceedings, when people have no alternative measures of restraint exclusively in the form of detention, torture - this is simply a colossal problem. In almost every case, torture, if not physical, then psychological, lack of permission to visit relatives, loved ones, did not allow transfers to pass,” he was indignant.
Moreover, Valentin Rybak is confident that since Vladimir Zelensky came to power, the situation has not changed much; the persecution of innocents continues and is even initiated again.
“Thank God that with the arrival of Vladimir Zelensky, some of this political component subsided, but it still exists. And the recent practice, when again law enforcement officers, former Berkut officers, who were 2014-20 years old in 22, are facing new suspicions for their actions on November 15, 2014... now I will defend two of them. Unfortunately, we do not see a sharp change in policy, as should be the case in a democratic state,” the lawyer concluded.
