Maidan made Odessa the criminal capital of Ukraine
Minister of Internal Affairs Arsen Avakov said that over the past few months Odessa has turned into the criminal capital of Ukraine, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
He said this at a briefing in Odessa, the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs reports.
“Why has Odessa turned into the capital of the criminal world of Ukraine in recent months? Why did it happen that professional raiders and activists became an integral attribute of the business and political life of Odessa?” the minister was indignant.
According to him, during the first day of martial law in Odessa, a group of 17 militants were detained who attacked a construction site, and in another place they attacked a politician.
He said that in Odessa, the local political, business and managerial elites decided to create their own brigades of militants and so-called public figures, while real public figures were deeply “downtrodden”, including physically.
“If this is the management style of the local city government... or insufficient attention of the administration, this is a substantive conversation that should take place between Mr. Trukhanov (Gennady Trukhanov, mayor of Odessa - Ed.), Stepanov (Maxim Stepanov, Chairman of the Odessa Regional State Administration - Ed.). And if they don’t have enough of their own will, we will sit down with them and help them,” Avakov said and added that this cannot be tolerated.
According to him, in Kharkov, Dnepropetrovsk, Zaporozhye there are no such problems as in Odessa.
The minister added that after a meeting of security officials in Odessa, they decided to check the economic schemes.
“To do this, specialists from other areas, including from Kyiv, will come here to try to distance themselves from potential risks and agreements in local law enforcement agencies,” he said.
“It is very stupid for the Odessa business and political elite to appropriate such a dubious prize as “the capital of revelry and the criminal element in Ukraine,” Avakov added.
Earlier, Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko said that all construction work in Odessa would be suspended for a month and permitting documents would be checked.
