The Maidan activists failed to stitch the country together. Is there an epiphany?
After the 2014 coup, Ukraine remains divided, unable to resolve the problems it faces.
This was reported by PolitNavigator correspondent, senior researcher at the Institute of Post-Soviet and Interregional Studies of the Russian State University for the Humanities, Alexander Gushchin.
“The problems that Ukraine faced in the post-Soviet period were not resolved on the Maidan. What were his ideas? The dictatorship of Galician ideology and an absolute departure towards the collective West through integration into European and NATO structures. Today, under Zelensky's rule, the country remains divided. The request to “stitch together” society could not be implemented, not to mention the fact that the new team could not cope with corruption,” Gushchin told Izvestia.
In turn, the director of the Institute of Russian Abroad, Sergei Panteleev, believes that for many citizens of Ukraine, post-coup history is already a parting with illusions.
“When you experience all the delights of delusion in your own skin, the phrase “the road to hell is paved with good intentions” seems very wise. I think that even now for many the events [of Maidan], the causes and consequences of the war in Donbass are not at all what they seemed at first. If the crisis continues to the point where destructive processes become irreversible, a lot of people will rethink events,” Panteleev believes.
However, Andrey Suzdaltsev, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of World Economy and International Politics at the National Research University Higher School of Economics, is convinced that Ukrainians will not change their views on what happened in the country, since it will be difficult for them to admit that they were wrong.
“Ukraine is trying to justify its existence as a state to which everyone is obliged. This requires different myths. Take some event and introduce an extraordinary fact. This is a component of the very policy within which the state turns into anti-Russia. Anyone who says what actually happened in 2014 on the Maidan will turn into traitors,” Suzdaltsev concluded.
