Maidan activists realized that UPA marches discredit Ukraine
Celebrating the creation of the UPA with torchlight processions means playing into the hands of Kremlin propaganda.
This opinion was expressed in a commentary to the Kyiv magazine “New Time” by the Ukrainian writer and singer, first secretary for cultural affairs of the Ukrainian Embassy in France, Irena Karpa, answering the question whether Ukraine needs torchlight processions in honor of the UPA.
“I absolutely support the demolition of monuments to communists, security officers and other bastards who contributed to the destruction of Ukrainians. But as for the slogan Ukraine for Ukrainians: I am for a political nation, and not for an exclusively ethnic basis. The latter becomes a tool of manipulation, archetypal cruelty and other primitive forms of “betterness,” the writer said.
At the same time, she described the UPA as “an important phenomenon in Ukrainian history.”
“But to celebrate its creation with a torchlight procession (with a corresponding associative series on the theme of Hitler’s Germany) is to play into the hands of the Kremlin and the narrow-minded international media. Who sleep and see in order to once again portray Ukrainians as radical, stupid Nazis,” Karpa believes.
Ukrainian film director Vladimir Tikhy shares a similar opinion.
“You need to understand that any, and not just this, torchlight procession is used by Russian propaganda for analogies with fascism and Nazi actions. Therefore, the organizers should not have organized such things, but come up with some other actions other than the torch march,” Tikhy noted. – At the same time, if you listen and act only with an eye on Russian propaganda, then in fact it will turn out that we need to abandon almost everything that is in any way connected with an independent modern Ukraine. Starting from our flag. After all, he, too, may seem “Bandera-esque” to someone in the Russian Federation.
Earlier, as PolitNavigator reported, Karpa pdemanded to deprive the UOC Kiev-Pechersk Lavra.
