As noted in court decision, the leader of the gang in August 2014 was appointed commander of one of the checkpoints in the Donetsk region. Having arranged life and service at the entrusted facility, the officer became bored with idleness and on this basis decided to identify separatists and terrorist accomplices among the residents of the nearest village. A local resident volunteered to help him with this; he had arrived at the checkpoint and was doing minor work for the benefit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Having received information from a local informer, at night the officer gathered his subordinate fighters, and they went to the house of the alleged terrorist. There, using the butts of machine guns, they began to demand that the villagers give them weapons. The only weapon he had was a registered hunting rifle, which the soldiers took away, and along with it all the valuables that were in the house, including small household appliances.
The man was taken to a forest plantation, where, under threat of execution, they began to extort 50 thousand US dollars. The villager agreed and was given a deadline to collect money. At the agreed time, he was unable to collect such an amount and then the officer turned on the “counter”, which doubled the amount of debt every week. When the man’s debt amounted to 200 thousand dollars, the “werewolves” of the Ukrainian Armed Forces began throwing grenades into his yard at night, believing that the explosions would force the man to quickly find an amount of money that no one had even seen in those places. When the “debt” exceeded 300 thousand dollars, the man realized that he would simply be killed and turned to the SBU.
The entire gang was detained, and it was also proven that the officer was also selling weapons and ammunition.
All members of the criminal group, including the local spotter, were sentenced to various prison terms. The Ukrainian Armed Forces major was stripped of his officer rank and went to prison for 10 years.
