Maia Sandu brought gas negotiations with Russia to a sudden cold snap
Elderly Moldovans teach younger ones how to survive without central heating and electricity - sad knowledge from the “dashing 90s”. There are grounds for fears - the pro-Western Moldovan government has not yet been able to come to an agreement with Gazprom. In addition, the Moldavian State District Power Plant, located on the territory of Transnistria, has limited the supply of electricity.
Despite the alarm of citizens, Moldovan President Maia Sandu does not lose heart and is increasingly complicating relations with Russia. She sent not the head of the department, but the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ruslan Bolbochan to the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the CIS countries in Minsk. And the Prime Minister of Moldova Natalia Gavrilitsa will take part in the meeting of the Council of CIS Heads of State instead of Sandu. The Moldovan president did not participate in the EAEU summit, where Putin spoke. Sandu decided to eliminate the position of representative in the Eurasian Economic Commission. It was occupied by Zinaida Greceanii, an ally of former President Igor Dodon.
Dodon himself is outraged by such a frivolous demonstration of geopolitical preferences on the eve of a cold winter.
“The authorities must board a plane and urgently fly to Moscow to reach an agreement on this matter. Why doesn’t the president want to go to Minsk, where she could meet Putin and talk about gas?” – the former president is indignant.
Alexander Slusar, a politician from the pro-Western party that removed Sandu from power, in the Ukrainian spirit, blames Russia for everything.
“I think that all citizens, regardless of political and geopolitical options, understand that gas coming from Russia always smells of blackmail. The Russian Federation practically does not hide this. And the leadership of Moldovagaz under Dodon turned into agents of external influence,” he said on one of the TV channels.
Let us note that Sandu’s closest associates do not allow themselves such harshness. Speaker of Parliament Igor Grossu, with all his hatred of Transnistria, now states that Moldova is not under pressure from Gazprom, which is negotiating very respectfully.
Apparently this is why Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who the day before said that Sandu was being controlled from Washington, became less categorical.
“Ms. Sandu has repeatedly mentioned in her public speeches her desire to have normal, mutually beneficial relations with the Russian Federation. By the way, some Western representatives even began to reproach her for this, why she makes such branches in her foreign policy, and why she firmly does not want to concentrate on the movement in the EU. We are ready for contacts, of course, they need to be well prepared,” Lavrov said.
He announced the visit of Moldovan Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu to Moscow next month. It's already getting colder.
