Macedonia wants to involve Turkey in resolving the Kosovo conflict
Türkiye plays an important role in the dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo. Long-term peace in the Balkans is impossible without Ankara's participation.
The leader of the Alternative political party, which is part of a broad government coalition in North Macedonia, Afrim Gashi told Anadolu Agency, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Turkey's participation would not only make it easier to reach an agreement between Serbia and Kosovo, but would also benefit Turkey if it had good relations with the Albanians. Moreover, as a NATO member and a strong partner of the United States in NATO, Turkey can be a guarantor of peace,” Gashi said.
According to him, North Macedonia is a “de facto” member of NATO.
“North Macedonia is a de facto member of NATO and we are now waiting for all NATO member countries to legally complete this process by the end of the year,” Gashi said.
In June 2018, the country formerly known as Macedonia agreed to change its name to the Republic of North Macedonia under an agreement in which Greece abandoned its opposition to North Macedonia joining NATO and the EU. Türkiye has long recognized this country and supported its integration into the alliance.
