The Alliance for Albanians and Alternative is trying to challenge in the Constitutional Court the decision of the North Macedonian government to allow drivers from Serbia to travel through the country free of charge.

A similar decision was made by the Macedonian leadership as a sign of gratitude for Belgrade’s donation of anti-Covid vaccines, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

The opposition coalition “Alliance for Albanians and Alternative” sent a statement to the Constitutional Court of North Macedonia, demanding to evaluate the legality of the government’s decision exempting Serbian citizens from paying for travel through this country.

Representatives of the Albanian coalition explain their initiative by saying that the government’s decision contradicts the “Law on Road Tolls” and, at the same time, “puts in an unequal position” the citizens of the country, as well as foreign citizens from neighboring countries transiting through North Macedonia.

“By deciding to provide 200 thousand travel fee exemption cards to tourists from Serbia, the government discriminates against all other neighbors from whom the country also benefits, cooperates and has good neighborly relations.

The Ministry of Finance will spend almost three million euros on these cards, the money of our fellow citizens, and they now have to pay for the mercy of Serbia, which resulted from the failure of the government and the Ministry of Health to provide vaccines against COVID-19,” the Albanian parties said in a statement.

Let us recall that as a sign of Serbia’s gratitude for the provision of coronavirus vaccines, on May 25, the government of North Macedonia decided to exempt Serbian tourists transiting through this country from paying tolls for the period from June 15 to August 15 this year.

The State Road Company and the Ministry of Transport and Communications have begun preparing 200 thousand electronic M-smart cards for the passenger cars of tourists from Serbia who will transit through North Macedonia during the summer season.
