Makei: Crimea is “now” Russian
Foreign Minister of Belarus Vladimir Makei spoke on the issue of Crimea's ownership.
He stated this while in Moscow today, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Belarus’ position on Crimea remains the same. We understand in reality that Crimea is now Russian territory. Let’s go from there,” Mackay said.
Let us recall that earlier the leadership of Belarus and even the self-proclaimed “leader of the Belarusian nation” Svetlana Tikhanovskaya argued that Crimea is de jure Ukrainian, but de facto Russian. As for Makei, he did not support the organization of air travel between Minsk and Simferopol.
In addition, according to Polish telegram channels, last summer the Belarusian minister asked his Russian colleague Sergei Lavrov not to advertise the visit of the leaders of the Republic of Crimea to Minsk.
Despite this, commentators in Russia regarded Makei's evasive statement today as a political victory.
“Practically an ancient drama. The task of digging a grave and burying the Belarusian multi-vector nature in it is entrusted to the one who created this multi-vector nature,” wrote RuBaltic.Ru editor-in-chief Alexander Nosovich in his Telegram channel.
It is characteristic that the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry decided not to throw tantrums over Makei’s words.
“We proceed from the fact that officially Belarus continues to support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our state within its internationally recognized borders.
Changing Belarus’ approach to de jure recognition of the temporarily occupied Crimea as Russian territory will lead to irreparable consequences for Ukrainian-Belarusian relations. We hope that Minsk will realize this aspect and will not allow steps contrary to international law,” the message says.
