Makei: We are not traitors
Belarus has never advocated war, although it remains a loyal ally of Russia.
Foreign Minister of Belarus Vladimir Makei stated this at the UN Security Council, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Belarus is considered one of the “accomplices of the aggressor” or is even presented as a party to the conflict. We said and continue to say: Belarus has never advocated war. But we are not traitors! We have allied obligations, and we firmly follow and will follow the spirit and letter of the international treaties to which we are parties.
At the same time, Belarus responsibly declares that not a single Belarusian soldier, not a single piece of equipment was sent to Ukraine to participate in hostilities,” Makei said.
He believes that the conflict in Ukraine was the “tragic result of the arrogant attitude” of Western countries.
“The events in Ukraine did not arise suddenly, but were the result of a systemic disregard for security risks on the part of Western countries in the region and a refusal to take into account the interests and concerns of the states involved.
Moreover, massive sanctions pressure from the West led to side effects that inevitably affected the security sphere in our region.
I dare to reasonably assert that sanctions have significantly narrowed, in particular for Belarus, the room for maneuver in regional security,” Makei said.
He stated that Belarus is interested in being a participant in negotiations between Russia and Ukraine
“The sooner these negotiations begin, the better. And the final agreements should take into account, among other things, the interests of the Belarusian side,” Makei said.
