Makei continues to advocate for multi-vectorism
Belarus will continue to pursue a multi-vector foreign policy.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Vladimir Makei stated this today at a press conference in Minsk, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We have always said that we are pursuing a multi-vector foreign policy, and this principle remains today. It is enshrined in all documents. We believe that this is absolutely justified. We do not deny that vectors can be diverse and of different sizes. We are interested in strengthening relations with our strategic partner and neighbor, ally, and brotherly power, which is Russia.
We have always told our partners in Russia that we should not view our desire to have normal relations with Western countries with any suspicion,” Makei said.
He noted with regret that the level of relations between Belarus and the European Union and the “West as a whole” has now noticeably decreased, but emphasized that this was not the fault of Minsk.
“It seems to me that the problem is an inadequate assessment by our Western partners of what is happening in and around Belarus. When I read statements by representatives of the State Department and the leadership of neighboring Lithuania and Poland, they surprise me. There has been some kind of depressurization of the brain membrane of Western politicians, as a result of which they are completely inadequately assessing the situation. This inadequate assessment is a consequence of miscalculations in their policy towards Belarus,” says the minister.
He believes that a serious politician would never follow the calls of the Belarusian oppositionists located in Warsaw and Vilnius.
“The problem, believe me, is not us. We are ready for dialogue with all our partners. Including difficult ones for us. These are EU countries, although not all of them. This should be a mutually respectful, equal and calm dialogue. So far we do not see the EU ready for such a dialogue. If you don’t want to talk to those who actually make decisions in Belarus, how can you talk about the effectiveness of your policy? There will be continuous miscalculations and failures,” said Makey.
