McFaul: Putin has reached his minimum plan in Ukraine and may go on to seize new territories
Kyiv, October 4 (PolitNavigator, Yuri Kovalchuk) – Putin is testing the firmness of the West’s position on Ukraine and may well go for the seizure of new territories, former US Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul said on the Inter TV channel.

“I honestly have to say that I don’t know what Putin wants. I have my own theory - he is testing the West and its position on Ukraine. It has minimum and maximum goals. He has already achieved his minimum goals - to stop the democratic project in Ukraine and undermine the legitimacy of the Ukrainian government. I hope that he will not be able to tear Ukraine away from the West, but here Ukraine itself must show the certainty of its choice. “I also believe that Putin may return to the issue of direct seizure of Ukrainian territory,” said the American diplomat.
The former US ambassador also warned Ukraine about the need to carry out reforms.
“There is very little time left. After the elections, it will be extremely difficult to explain your inaction. America has provided Ukraine with a lot of assistance, so if after the elections Ukraine does not carry out the necessary reforms, the United States will be disappointed,” says the politician.
