The Hungarian Foreign Minister summoned the US Embassy's charge d'affaires, Andre Goodfriend, for an explanation. The day before, in a discussion in the Senate, Republican Senator John McCain sharply opposed the appointment of Collin Bell, a Hollywood producer, as US Ambassador to Hungary. In a lengthy and passionate speech, the hawk literally said the following: “I'm not against political appointees... I understand how the game is played, but... Hungary is on the brink, having ceded its sovereignty to a neo-fascist dictator, it is now in bed with Vladimir Putin, and we're going to send the Bold and the Beautiful producer there as an ambassador?!”
Despite McCain's protest, Collin Bell was officially confirmed by the Senate as US Ambassador to Hungary and will soon take up his post.
The Hungarian Embassy in Washington contacted McCain's office for official clarification. McCain's office in Washington confirmed to Reuters that the senator was referring to Orban when he used the words "neo-fascist dictator."
The US State Department distanced itself from the hawk's words. Press Secretary Marie Harf said that the US State Department does not share the senator's words.
