This is stated in a statement released by McCain's press service, RBC reports.
“Although I do not usually participate in observing elections in imaginary countries, I appreciate this unique invitation. If the so-called Lugansk People's Republic is interested in holding democratic elections, I invite its supporters to lay down their arms and participate in the next round of elections in a free and united Ukraine,” McCain said in his response.
After this statement, the senator’s press service additionally confirmed McCain’s refusal of the invitation to attend the elections.
Earlier, the head of the LPR, Igor Plotnitsky, told reporters that he was inviting McCain to observe the elections.
“If the OSCE does not want to come, I will ask you, as a free press, to extend an invitation to the most truthful person, a democrat of democrats, who travels all over the world, tells the rules and foundations of democracy, who honestly and fairly defends the skies of the United States of America over Vietnam... I'm talking about Senator McCain,” said Plotnitsky.
