Macron will try to do what Merkel failed

Tomorrow's meeting of the Normandy format participating countries in Berlin is dictated by the desire of the newly elected French President Emmanuel Macron to act as a peacemaker.

Political scientist Oleg Bondarenko stated this in a comment to PolitNavigator. According to him, the new French president is unlikely to be able to force his Ukrainian counterpart Petro Poroshenko to implement the Minsk agreements, since these attempts by German Chancellor Angela Merkel were unsuccessful.

“So far there are no prerequisites to say that this meeting will be of a breakthrough nature. I think it’s just that Macron, as a person who has just taken office, wants, and this is quite natural for a newcomer, to try himself in the role of a peacemaker. This meeting is related to Macron’s desire to prove himself. I doubt it will work, to put it mildly, but it's good for his PR. I doubt that if Merkel failed to force Poroshenko to implement the Minsk agreements before, that Macron will succeed now,” Bondarenko said.
