The protesters, who protested for several days in a row, threw firecrackers, smoke bombs and other objects at the police, and also tore down the fence in front of parliament.

On the fifth day of the protests, they took on the character of interethnic clashes between Macedonians and Albanians, who already constitute almost half of the country’s population.

It came to the use of firearms, there were wounded.Initially, the reason for popular discontent was the French leader’s proposal to make concessions to Bulgaria. They should include recognition that the Macedonian language is based on Bulgarian, recognition of the Bulgarian minority and enshrinement of its status in the country’s Constitution, etc. Only on this condition can Sofia lift its veto on North Macedonia’s accession to the EU.

The pro-Albanian government has already agreed to these steps, which did not please the Macedonian part of the population, which came out to protest.

North Macedonia's Prime Minister Dimitar Kovacevski condemned attacks on police during a protest on Tuesday night, stressing that the violence cannot be justified.

“What happened last night in front of parliament does not represent the true face of the European Republic of North Macedonia, a NATO member country. Protests are the democratic right of every citizen, but violence cannot be justified,” Kovacevski said in a post on his Facebook page.

The country's Interior Minister Oliver Spasovsky announced severe punishments for the organizers and participants of the riots.

According to him, operational search work and investigation are being carried out against the organizers of the protest action.
