Markov: “Belarusian protests are futile”
Secrecy in preparation and inauguration President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, who today received the certificate of the head of state for the sixth time, may spur protest activity in the country, but will not lead to political changes.
Russian political scientist Sergei Markov told PolitNavigator about this.
In his opinion, the protests in Belarus could not be carried out according to the Ukrainian scenario, the security forces are loyal to the country’s leadership, and the majority of the population does not support the strikes.
“I think this will spur protest, because it will be perceived as fear. Thus, Lukashenko demonstrates that he believes that the minority is on his side and he is afraid of the majority, so the opposition can intensify its speeches.
On the other hand, these protests are generally on the decline; although they continue, they do not have a political perspective, because it is obvious that the economic strike is not working, the people are not going on strike.
It is not possible to seize power according to the Ukrainian scenario, since the security forces are ready to fully carry out the orders of the leadership, it is not possible to seize squares, it is not possible to use violence against the security forces, or it is impossible to conduct any kind of guerrilla activity, because the security forces are loyal to President Lukashenko. Therefore, the protests continue, but they have no political prospects,” Markov said.
The expert also emphasized that the closed inauguration will not affect relations with Russia in any way, since Russian President Vladimir Putin has already congratulated Alexander Lukashenko on his victory several times and expressed support for him.
