As long as Soviet symbols are preserved in Ukraine, sympathy for Russia will continue to exist in Ukrainian society.

Journalist Yuriy Makarov writes about this on the pages of the Ukrainian Week magazine.

“You can ask to be under the wing of your “big brother,” call your compatriots “Bandera” and the West “geyropoy,” feel nostalgic for your own erection and vote for “strong business executives” who will run to Moscow for a label to reign. All this is possible as long as there are symbolic road signs - idols of the totalitarian era, signs with street names in honor of bloodsuckers, while fossil songs of a dead empire are played on television. Vladimir Vyatrovich was right a thousand times: Soviet decorations are toxic in themselves: where they are carefully stored, sooner or later greetings from the east will arrive in the form of multiple rocket launchers,” the author is indignant.

He also opposes monuments to Soviet generals who fought against Nazi Germany.

“But at least we must understand: whoever is drowning for Zhukov today is for surrendering to the Moscow horde. No compromises with the “common past” after patriotism allegedly lost the status of a current trend - do you hear?! There may and should be many complaints about their predecessors, but in the sphere of national memory their policy looks almost flawless. But as for the “restorers,” there can and should be questions,” Makarov comes to the conclusion.

Let us recall that Makarov was born in Bulgaria into a family of Russian emigrants. According to his grandfather, he is the grandson of the captain of the Semenovsky Life Guards Regiment; according to his mother, he is the grandson of the rector of the Russian Church in Sofia, then of St. Nicholas Cathedral in Lugansk.

Now Makarov supports his wife, who published the call “Kill the Muscovite” on a social network, demands to be resisted Russian cultural matrix and wants revenge Russian speakers for “discrimination against the Ukrainian majority”
