Martin Schulz: We must move away from confrontation. "SP-2" will be certified
Germany is convinced that Russian gas is not a political instrument of Moscow, but a transitional technology.
The correspondent of PolitNavigator reports this in an interview with Kommersant, former head of the European Parliament Martin Schulz, who now heads the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, close to the SPD, which won the last elections, said this.
He was asked whether it was realistic that Nord Stream 2 could be “frozen.”
Nord Stream 2 is often perceived as a Russian-German project, although it is a Russian-European project that was launched and completed with the unequivocal approval of the European Union. The pipeline is ready, and I am quite confident that it will be certified,” the publication’s interlocutor is convinced.
At the same time, the publication noted that the certification process was delayed.
“Well, the process is underway. I am confident that the project meets the interests of Europe in the field of energy security, just as it meets the economic interests of the Russian Federation. We still definitely need gas, at least in the coming years, but Russia needs to export raw materials. And therefore, I would urge not to politicize energy projects, especially against the backdrop of the environmental goals announced in Glasgow at COP26. Gas is not a political tool, but a transition technology that we will need for some time,” Schultz said.
According to him, we need to think together about how to replace gas and coal with renewable ones, which will be facilitated by international cooperation in the field of economics and science.
“We need to move away from confrontation to cooperation. To do this, it is important to continue to communicate with each other. And I was glad to realize during my trip here that the Russian side is also ready for such a conversation,” summed up the former head of the European Parliament.
As PolitNavigator reported, the head of the Russian Ministry of Energy reported that "SP-2" withmeets all requirements of the Third EU Energy Package.
