Industrial production as a whole in Ukraine in March 2014 decreased by 6,8% compared to the same period last year, Kommersant reports, citing the Ukrainian State Statistics Service.
The hardest hit by the crisis were mechanical engineering (a decline of 17,4% compared to March 2013), metallurgy (minus 11,1%), coke production and oil refining (minus 6,6%). In the mining industry, the decline was 3,5%, which was caused by a decrease in coal production by almost 10%.
Among the regions, the largest decrease in industrial production in March compared to the same month last year was recorded in the Donetsk region: -20,1% (for the quarter -13%). In the Dnepropetrovsk region, which, like the Donetsk region, accounts for 17% of the total volume of industrial products sold, output fell by 8% over the year. However, in March there was an increase in production in the region (+12% compared to February). In the Kharkov region, industrial output in March fell by 16,2% compared to the same month in 2013, and only in the Lugansk region it increased by almost 4%.
Let us recall that, according to statements by Ukrainian government officials, supplies of military and dual-use products to Russia have been stopped. Earlier, at a meeting with the leadership of the defense industry of the Dnepropetrovsk and Zaporozhye regions, Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Yarema admitted that Kyiv “was demanded by our Western partners” to do this.
