“Why did you decide to name your son Oles? How did you choose the name?
— My husband graduated from Kharkov University. Faculty of Philology. Ukrainian branch. He loved Ukrainian literature and language very much. He taught me to love Ukrainian poets - Maxim Rylsky and Pavel Tychyna. It was he who taught me to love them. My husband was very fond of the Ukrainian writer Oles Gonchar. Not only him, but our entire generation. We were then reading the novels “Praporonostsi” (“Flag Bearers”).
I wanted to give my son the name Alexey, because both my husband Alexey and I liked this name. And my husband wanted Oles. We had a friend - a professor. Vasily Vasilievich. He was dean at the Drahomanov Pedagogical Institute. He worked there for many years. I read Ukrainian language and literature. And he and his wife strongly supported their husband so that their son would be given the name Oles and only Oles.
And so we all went together to register Olesya. We arrived at the registry office. We then lived on Solomenka. And the registry office tells us that the name “Oles” is not in the “dictionary.” In fact, Oles is Alexander. And Vasily Vasilyevich says: you know, when was this dictionary published? Right now I’m working on a dictionary, and literally in a year it will be released. And Oles will be there as a separate name. This is Oles after all. And Alexander is Sasha, Sashko. And they wrote down their son as “Oles Alekseevich” on the birth certificate.
And after some days, five or seven, we receive a letter from the regional registry office. “Dear parents, Valentina Pavlovna and Alexey Grigorievich, we ask you to come to the regional registry office regarding the name of your son...”
We are gathering again in company, Vasily Vasilyevich is going again with his wife Nadezhda Lukinichna, who for many years was the editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Young Leninist”. There was such a children's newspaper, remember? And once we worked together with her. We were very close family friends.
We call them and again go to the regional registry office. They tell us there: “Oh, so much trouble. The report was not accepted. Need to do something". But the birth certificate has already been issued. Here Vasily Vasilyevich takes on the role and says: “You know, let’s get out of the situation this way: we’ll write him down as Alexey for the report, but Oles will remain on the birth certificate.” She agreed. For the report, they wrote it down as Alexey. But we still have the evidence.” she said.
