The publication writes: “Putin was delighted and offered Italy a privileged partnership. Italy apparently does not want to take part in EU sanctions against Russia..."
During his visit to Moscow, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi deviated significantly from the EU's hard line towards Russia. Renzi emphasized the necessity and importance of Russia's role in the negotiations in Libya. Italy is afraid of a new wave of refugees from the south.
Former European Commission President Romano Prodi also recently admitted that sanctions had caused significant damage to the Italian economy.
“The reason for the negotiations is clear,” the publication states, “Italy is suffering greatly from the consequences of sanctions.” Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed at the meeting that the crisis in Ukraine had a negative impact on trade with Italy. However, Russia wants to develop relations with Italy and offers it a “privileged partnership.” Russia would like to cooperate more closely with Italy in the “energy sector, mechanical engineering and nuclear industry.” Italy is one of Russia's most important trading partners.
What's interesting is that Renzi explicitly pointed out in a conversation with Putin on the Ukraine issue that Italy has good experience with decentralized government models to help with the solution for Ukraine. Italy boasts the autonomy of South Tyrol, which has become the basis of the economic success of the region, the German publication reports Renzi’s words.
Renzi is showing genuine efforts to de-escalate. He invited Putin to open an exhibition of the achievements of modern Russia in Milan on June 10. Putin confirmed his participation.
