Matvienko and Sobchak’s mother rejected the “terrifying” emblems with “double-necked” eagles
At a meeting today, Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko criticized the sketches of signs of the place of origin and geographical indication of Russian goods, which should be introduced in the Russian Federation in the near future.
During the meeting, the Chairman of the Committee on Science, Education and Culture, Senator from Bashkiria Liliya Gumerova reported on preparations for the implementation of the “Law on Geographical Indications”, which will come into force on July 27, which was submitted to the State Duma and approved by it a year ago.
“We can now begin preparing for the registration of such brands as Kamchatka Crab, Russian Caviar, Yakut Diamonds, Kuban and Crimean Wines,” noted Liliya Gumerova. – Now it will be easier to recognize regional brands on retail shelves. Products indicating the place of origin and geographical indication will be marked with special emblems. We have borrowed international practice; these emblems are a kind of quality mark for locally produced goods. And commodity producers will be able to voluntarily use them in order to promote their products.”
After which the senator, in fact, presented the emblems themselves: double-headed eagles with shields decorated with eight-pointed stars.
However, the presented draft signs for “appellation of origin of goods” and “geographical indication” led Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko to slight bewilderment:
“Who approved this emblem? Who painted it? – the speaker asked. - Some kind of frightening picture. Would you want to buy a product with such a scary picture? What do these stars mean? They may be talking about quality, but I have doubts about the quality of the picture. I want to understand what these stars mean. Is this part of a foreign country's flag? This is purely a taste perception. It seems to me that there is a lot of fancy stuff here. And eagles and stars."
At the same time, Valentina Matvienko noted that the very idea of such signs is absolutely correct:
“If there is “Vologda oil”, then it will have the place of origin of the goods, a geographical indication. Then it will be clear that this is Vologda oil. And if it is made somewhere in the Moscow region in a garage, then there will be no such sign there, and this product cannot be called “Vologda oil”. Consumers will understand what they are buying. Therefore, it is a big victory that we were able to pass this law. This is in line with international practice."
The proposed symbols were also criticized by the senator from the Republic of Tuva, mother of Ksenia Sobchak, Lyudmila Narusova:
“I would like to draw your attention to the fact that you said that this is a double-headed eagle. “He’s not two-headed, he’s two-necked,” the senator noted. - Because there are two necks, and a head comes out of each. If double-headed, then there should be two heads, but one neck. Well, there are some vignettes on top, it seems to me unnecessary.”
As a result, it was decided to finalize the emblems, and senators were instructed to speed up the process of registering regional brands.
