Chairman of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation Valentina Matvienko stated this today at the “Great Russian Word” forum taking place in Yalta.
“These are ongoing attempts to oust the Russian language from school classes and student audiences in the countries of the former Soviet Union. This is a deliberate discriminatory policy of a number of states to limit the use of the Russian language in the political and business sphere, as well as in the media. All this causes reasonable concern,” Matvienko said.
According to her data, since the end of the last century the number of Russian-speaking people in the world has decreased by several tens of millions.
“This negative trend must definitely be overcome. Therefore, the increase in the number of students taking language courses in a number of countries who want to get an education at Russian universities deserves full support and development,” Matvienko said.
She believes that it is necessary to open branches of Russian universities, primarily in the CIS, and introduce programs to encourage the study of the Russian language abroad. In particular, a targeted program of methodological assistance to teachers of Russian studies, an interactive education program, and foreign Russian-language media resources are needed.
“Maybe it’s worth thinking about a system of grants and increased scholarships for students. So far we have only isolated examples of such work, but it needs to be carried out on a large scale,” Matvienko said.
