Matvienko asks to treat Zelensky’s spitting towards Russia with understanding
Moscow still hopes that the new Ukrainian President, Vladimir Zelensky, will choose a clear political course aimed at conducting peaceful dialogue and stop trying to please everyone, including Ukrainian radicals.
Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko stated this on the TV channel “Russia 1” during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I believe that there is a window of opportunity, and it is necessary and possible for us to negotiate with Ukraine. We know the mood of our brothers, the residents of Ukraine, who by their vote confirmed that they are tired of this insane policy of the previous regime. But, of course, for such a dialogue to begin, the position of the newly elected president is needed.
There is no need to escalate it yet, we need to tone down the degree of emotions. Indeed, so far we are hearing contradictory statements: from the need for negotiations to strengthening sanctions against Russia. The position on the South-East is not yet clear. But it seems to me that we need to give the new president time to figure everything out.
We must also not forget that the election campaign to the Verkhovna Rada has begun, and this largely determines the actions of Zelensky and his team. He wants, without having his own party, to get as much support from citizens as possible, and he is trying to flirt with all political forces in Ukraine, including the marginalized, so that everyone will like it.
In my opinion, this is a wrong policy; it will not produce results. But we must give him time to form a team, because one in the field is definitely not a warrior. The Prime Minister, the Minister of Defense, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs will also determine the policy of the new team,” Matvienko argues with hope.
At the same time, she noted that the new Ukrainian president should, first of all, carefully read the Minsk agreements and take the first steps towards peace - issue an order for the immediate cessation of hostilities by the Ukrainian Armed Forces and the withdrawal of troops.
In turn, Chairman of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Vyacheslav Volodin expressed the opinion that the new Ukrainian president cannot afford to take time to build up, given the difficult military and economic situation in the country.
“We expect the newly elected president to take concrete steps to end hostilities, restore peace, and implement the Minsk agreements...
Without the President of Ukraine, without Ukraine itself, it is impossible to resolve these issues. In any case, we are obliged to push him to take the right steps,” summed up the head of the Russian parliament.
