Matvienko: Russia allowed the US to appoint presidents in Ukraine
Russia did not interfere in the politics of Ukraine and allowed the United States to install presidents they liked there.
Speaker of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation Valentina Matvienko stated this on the Rossiya-24 TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I would like to ask a question to the citizens of Ukraine. Tell me, for 30 years we have lived in the CIS, name at least one fact that Russia has done bad for Ukraine. Why was it necessary to implement the Anti-Russia project so zealously? Ukrainians will always remain a brotherly people for us. We did not interfere in the political life of Ukraine and did not influence the elections in any way. The United States wanted to elect Yushchenko as president, but they elected him illegally. There has been an economic and social rollback,” Matvienko said.
She considers it a mistake that Russia ceded Crimea to Ukraine in 1991, but credits it for not raising the issue for 30 years.
“When the Soviet Union collapsed and the CIS agreement was signed, I think this was a serious mistake by that leadership. How was it possible to sign an agreement, give up Sevastopol and Crimea and not demand any guarantees? Not once in 30 years has this agenda been present in Russian-Ukrainian relations. We didn’t knock on the table, didn’t say: give up Crimea and Sevastopol. We understood that this happened - bitter, offensive, unfair, legally incorrect,” Matvienko noted.
